Callann was born the son of a blacksmith of a small village near the
city of Lolle. For most of his
early life, he was raised by his mother, while his father worked in the forge
next door to their small house. Callann's
earliest memories were those of his mother telling stories of adventures and
ages gone by, of the Great Drakes, and the struggles and stories of the Arkati,
the Pantheon of Liabo in particular. It
was from these stories that Callann's life would be ultimately driven: from
these tales came a desire to adventure and achieve glory on the field of
battle. There would be no
"common" life for Callann, if he had any say in the matter.
In addition to such stories, Callann's mother taught him to read,
write, and of the various races and of quite a few of the beasts and monsters
that roamed the land. At the
time, it never occurred to Callann that such knowledge was uncommon for a
simple wife of a blacksmith. In
retrospect, he assumes that she was something more than a
"commoner," but rather perhaps a well educated daughter of some
minor noble, or even a retired adventurer, maybe a cleric, due to her
knowledge of the Arkati.
Anyway, such musings ultimately are irrelevant, because shortly
following Callann's fifth birthday, his mother was taken by a strange
pestilance that no empath could cure. As
such, her secrets of her past died with her, and no one, perhaps save his
father, knew who she really was. However,
so distraught by her death was Callann's father that he would never speak of
her in his presence again.
And so it was that Callann's life's focus shifted from his mother to
his father. For the next several
years he assisted his father in the smithy, where he grew to love the noise of
metal clashing with metal, a strangely comforting sound even to this day. And his dreams of adventure and grandeur were put on hold,
for a time, as his desire to learn the art of forging flourished.
Things remained the same for several years, until at the age of 12 the
village elders decided that all children of suitable age should be trained in
the use of weapons, due to the increasing dangers of raids from the forests
surrounding the village. Callann
soon found that he was exceedingly skilled with the use of the sword, and his
interest in learning to fight increased.
Between time in the forge and time spent training with weapons, Callann
grew in strength and agility, and distanced himself somewhat for his peers by
the time he reached his nineteenth birthday.
However, for several years, the mysterious urge to travel and to seek
adventure began to overtake him again. One
day, he asked for his father's permission to leave the village to seek his
fate as an adventurer. His father
refused to let him, scoffing at his visions of grandeur, saying that such a
"simple" life was far more rewarding than dying in a far away
battle, forgotten by all. Callann,
however, had other ideas, and snuck away one night with but a few supplies. It was a couple months later that he discovered that his
village had been burnt to the ground in a raid, and his father killed.
Feeling deeply saddened and responsible for leaving his father's death,
he has ever since changed from seeking glory and power to seeking to aid
others, and to protect those who cannot protect themselves.
It is in this way that he hopes to atone for his abandoning his father.
Eventually, Callann made his way to the city of Wehnimer's Landing,
where he began to try to make a name for himself.
It was not long, however, that his inexperience yielded fatal wounds at
the hands of a "mighty" kobold.
As he breathed his last, he prayed to Lorminstra for assistance,
regretting his foolishness. However,
after dying his soul did not pass through the ebon gate, but rather remained
next to his battered body. A
short time later, a selfless adventurer appeared out of a cloud of fog, and
brought him back to the courtyard in the Order of Voln.
It was here that Callann was brought back to life by a cleric, who told
him that he needed to give Lorminstra "deeds", so that she might
spare his life in the future. After
recovering, he set out to find what "deeds" were.
Upon finding what a "deed" was, Callan was shocked that
something so gracious as the gift of a second chance at life was given in
exchange for sucn inconsequencial trinkets.
Humbled by Lorminstra's mercy, Callann immediately pledged himself to
her, and swore an oath dedicating his life to her, for her generousity. As soon as he was permitted, he joined the Order of Voln,
with the hopes that the priveledges and powers of the Order might allow him to
be a more effective "paladin" of Lorminstra.
He did, however, find it was difficult to do such on his own. It was around this time that he heard of a recruiting drive,
in preparation for the impending invasion by Jantalar. After asking around about the various organizations, he
learned of the order known as Daigneach Onoir, which he found was filled with
like-minded people. It was for
this reason that he sought membership, and after being accepted, he was taken
on as a page by Lord Justiciar Errethe, in the Order of the Azure Hydra. |
